The power of reason. Why "because" changes everything.

Have you ever noticed that people are more likely to agree to a request when you give them a reason — even if the reason isn't that great?

That's exactly what Ellen Langer's 1978 study on compliance discovered. Her research revealed a simple yet powerful persuasion hack: the word "because" triggers automatic compliance, making people more likely to say yes without even thinking about it.

The Xerox machine experiment

Langer and her team tested how people reacted to different ways of asking to cut in line at a photocopy machine. They used three different approaches:

The three requests:

No reason: "May I use the Xerox machine?" — 60% said yes

Real reason: "...because I'm in a rush?" — 94% said yes

Meaningless reason: "...because I need to make copies?" — 93% said yes

Adding "because" drastically increased compliance — even when the reason was weak or obvious. People tend to hear the word "because" and instinctively accept the request without analyzing the justification.

"People don't just respond to requests. They respond to reasons."

How to use this in sales

If you want people to take action — buy, book a meeting, or commit — always give a reason. The brain processes "because" as a signal that a valid reason is coming, even if the reason isn't incredibly compelling.

Weak: "You should try our product!"

Strong: "You should try our product because it will help you close deals faster."

In negotiations and everyday life

This works everywhere. Need to convince your boss to push a deadline? "Can we push the deadline because it will give us time to improve quality?" Need a favor? "Can you pick me up from the airport because I won't have a ride?"

The added reason makes the request feel more justified, even if it's obvious. Whenever you want compliance, attach a reason using "because" — even if it's simple. Use this principle wisely, and you'll notice an increase in how often people say yes.
